SPACE TORSION
Space Torsion by Adriana Sa and John Klima
Adriana Sa and John Klima at the farm
Following an invitation to participate in Eufonia (November 19th - 21st 2021), my husband John Klima and I created a sound installation that activated an urban non-site: Rua da Bempostinha, a street in Lisbon, whose identity rarely extends beyond car parking. We made two intersecting "islands" of countryside, with looping sonic compositions that recall our off-grid place in the countryside (listen bellow). They were placed in front of ScratchBuilt Studios and Utero. The compostions were played back simultaneously through speakers modified with light sensors, so that the volume of each sound source depended on the light captured by a corresponding sensor (picture on the left).

Throughout the day, the amount of natural light captured by each sensor depended on the material architecture and the hour - there were some hours of shadow, and some of direct light. At night, the light came from lamps. In both cases, people could interact with the sound by producing shadows over the sensors. The soundscape never repeated: it varied depending on the hour of the day, the weather, the material architecture, human interaction, and the specific place where a person would be at the moment.
