Where is the music of sound, space, body and image?
The question challenged my trio with Atau Tanaka and Maria do Mar to intertwine sensibilities in May 2025. The possibility emerged through a show at Teatro do Bairro Alto (TBA), which we were offered two days to prepare on-site. The creative process was intense. I proposed a score with four sections, cued through stage scene changes - we used mobile light spots, shadows, light flashes, and a large visual projection onto multiple surfaces, transparent and opaque.
I played my audio-visual instrument, which includes a custom zither and a 3D software that processes pre-recorded sounds and graphics based on the acoustic sound. I also used a pocket synthesizer, a light sensor and a stroboscope to produce audio-visual flashes.
Tanaka entered states of the body that were rendered in sound. Heart, muscle, voice and breathing became sources of sound and data to excite and be sculpted by a modular synthesizer system. His body became a module of the system.
Mar explored her violin with extended techniques and electroacoustic prosthesis. Her sonic emissions and her Butoh-inspired body movements revealed intention as well as full openness to the unexpected.
In combination, we shaped a dramaturgy that interlaces moments of delicacy and density, with surprising turnarounds.
